Personal Stories
Stroke sufferers and their families aren't alone. Many courageous survivors
have chosen to share their stories to help others. Here is a real-life account
of a stroke experience:
Joyce Beatty
State Representative, Stroke Survivor
It came without warning: Joyce Beatty, 50, suddenly had no control over her
throat. She felt like she was choking and she couldn't swallow or talk.
Then her left side went numb. A colleague called 911. Joyce's doctors
diagnosed her with a stroke. She was at an increased risk for the attack: all
four of her grandparents had died of heart complications, and Joyce herself
was recently diagnosed with high blood pressure and would soon find she had
high cholesterol, as well.
To help others become aware of the symptoms and risk factors of stroke, Joyce
has become a spokesperson for the American Stroke Association's Operation Stroke
program and has used her position as a state legislator to support a stroke
council in Ohio.
