The Race Factor

The "Stroke" Belt

  • Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States, behind cardiovascular disease and cancer.
  • The risk for dying from a stroke is less than half of what it was 20 years ago.
  • Each year 500,000 Americans have their first stroke and 100,000 people experience a recurrent stroke.
  • About 25 percent of people who recover from their first stroke will experience another stroke within five years.
  • The risk for suffering another stroke is greatest immediately following a stroke. The risk decreases with time.
  • The incidence of stroke more than doubles with each successive decade for people aged 55 and older.
  • Two-thirds of all strokes occur in people aged 65 and older.
  • Twenty-two percent of men and 25 percent of women die within 1 year after suffering their first stroke.
  • Stroke is the leading cause of serious adult disability in the United States.
