Excessive Alcohol Consumption
People who have more than three drinks per day face a greater risk for both
hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke. Heavy alcohol consumption often leads to high
blood pressure, a major cause of stroke. Drinking heavily also wreaks havoc
on the body, impairing blood-cell functions and destroying platelets, cells
that help the blood clot.
However, drinking in moderation (one or two drinks per day) offers protection
against stroke, according to several studies.
